The Effect of a High-Intensity Interval Training Program on Body Mass Index in Military Personnel

Abstract

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the effect of a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program on the body mass index (BMI) of military personnel.

Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with experimental and control groups. The statistical population consisted of all military personnel. The sample size was determined based on the study inclusion criteria and using G*Power software. Based on an effect size of 0.45, statistical power of 0.95, and a significance level of 0.05, a total sample of 30 participants was determined. Participants were then randomly assigned to either the experimental group or the control group. To assess physical activity readiness, the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) and the Health and Physical Activity Questionnaire were administered. Body weight was measured using an AND digital scale (Model HL400) with a precision of 0.1 g, while height was measured using a SECA stadiometer (Germany). The high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocol was implemented based on the guidelines proposed by Buchheit and Laursen (2013). At the beginning of each session, participants performed a 10-minute warm-up, consisting of 5 minutes of light running at 40–50% of maximum heart rate, followed by 3 minutes of dynamic movements, including lunges, squats, and joint mobility exercises, and 2 minutes of progressive running up to 65% of maximum heart rate. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 at a significance level of 0.05

Results: The results indicated no statistically significant difference in posttest BMI scores between the HIIT and usual daily exercise groups (p ≥ 0.001).

Conclusion: The findings indicated that HIIT did not have a statistically significant effect on the BMI of military personnel. Therefore, HIIT alone may not be sufficient to improve BMI, and its combination with nutritional management and sustained exercise programs is recommended.
