Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy and self-compassion with adherence to treatment among patients with diabetes in Tehran. This applied study was conducted using a descriptive-correlational design. The statistical population consisted of all female members of the Tehran Diabetes Association during the second half of 2023–2024, from which 250 participants were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using Fatemi’s Treatment Adherence Questionnaire, the Schwarzer and Jerusalem General Self-Efficacy Scale, and Neff’s Self-Compassion Scale. Descriptive statistics including mean and standard deviation, as well as inferential analyses including multivariate regression analysis, multivariate analysis of variance, and independent t-test, were performed using SPSS version 21. The regression analysis indicated that self-efficacy positively and significantly predicted treatment adherence (β=0.152, p<0.01), explaining 22.8% of the variance in adherence to treatment. Furthermore, adding self-compassion to the regression model increased the explained variance to 29.1%, and self-compassion also significantly and positively predicted treatment adherence (β=0.256, p<0.01). The findings demonstrated that patients with higher levels of self-efficacy and self-compassion showed greater adherence to medical recommendations and treatment regimens. The findings suggest that self-efficacy and self-compassion are important psychological factors associated with improved treatment adherence among patients with diabetes. Therefore, psychological and educational interventions aimed at strengthening these variables may enhance self-care behaviors and improve treatment outcomes in diabetic patients. Integrating psychological support alongside medical treatment can play a significant role in reducing complications and improving patients’ quality of life.
